Wheee

So, I just got back from seeing Desolation of Smaug, and I have thoughts.

Largely, it made me happy. It was fun, the creepy factor with Gandalf in the Nazgul prison was awesome, there was an amazing effect when he ran into Sauron, where the shadow of Armor!Sauron faded into the eyeball faded into the shadow faded into the eyeball...it was pretty cool.

Note: I'm not going to discuss book vs movie, 'cause I know a crapload was added, I don't know what was cut--it's been like 10 years since I last read the book.

Anywho, I liked the Laketown stuff, the scenery in Mirkwood was pretty, I liked Beorn (sp?) though I could have done without the RANDOM GIANT BEE OH MY GOD IT HAD NO PLOT RELEVANCE AND IT WAS LIKE THE SIZE OF MY PALM FLITTING AROUND BILBO CURIOUSLY AND GAAAAAAH.

Yeah, I don't like bees.

Oh, for the at least one arachnophobe on my flist, there is a prolonged sequence with giant spiders. Tauriel and Legolas kill most of them.

Speaking of Tauriel, I would have liked her a lot better without the random Fili crush that served as her primary motivation. Sigh.

Legolas returned to his primary functions of being pretty, slightly dumb, and killing things with style, yo. He's always had the best fight scenes, and this movie didn't disappoint :D.

Thranduil was...mildly disturbing? Like Voldemort with Lucius Malfoy's face. About half the time it was cool, the other half it was just creepy. At least he ditched the impractical elk this time.

Smaug was also deeply unsettling, but in a completely 100% cool way. He was more snakelike than traditionally Western-dragonlike, and his voice was so deeeeeeep and his chest LIT UP when he was about to breathe fire and at one point he got COVERED IN MOLTEN GOLD AND IT WAS AWESOME.

::cough:: Completely unrelated, my GPS is a but and I spent forty minutes trying to find the theater (we went to a theater that serves actual dinner) because first it wouldn't recognize the address copied from the website, then I searched the name of the theater and it took me to TOWNHOUSES, then I typed in the name of a bar my friend told me was in the same shopping center and I got to DIFFERENT TOWNHOUSES and thus the Adventure. I finally got there about halfway through the previews.

Also, the end credits song is kind of mood whiplashy. And two of my dormant LotR OCs have woken up again. At least not the super embarrassing one.

Anywho, those are my Thoughts.
