okay, so nano is in like less than a week and i still haven't decided what to write. :< i've narrowed down my previous list of five to a list of three (based primarily on the fact that the two i cut would involve serious research i forgot to do...)
so, i am seeking opinions! every time i think i've picked one of these, i start to waver and think i want another one more, or i just don't want the one i've picked. as some of you may know, i am terrible at making decisions, so here we are.
A sort of deconstruction of High Fantasy/Quest Fantasy. This one's been on my list for a few years, originally I started working on it as a potential NaNo plot (I think back in 2011/2012?) and then got distracted and did something else.
Basically, it's a standard Chosen One story--there's a prophecy involved, break the world to save it, etc. etc.
Only it's not about the Chosen One herself--it's about someone who thought he was the Chosen One--like, he fit all the criteria of the prophecy and, having a foresight gift himself, had a vision of himself dying in the final battle. Then the actual Chosen One shows up, and it turns out she's...uh...kind of not very nice. And it's about this guy's story as he navigates his way toward his eventual fate, and he has a boyfriend, and it's basically about the peripheral characters in a Chosen One narrative, who tend to get screwed if they're not in the immediate Inner Circle.
Like, he does end up playing a pretty major role in saving the world, but he comes thisclose to defecting over to the enemy, in no small part because of how the Chosen One treats the people around her, being all wrapped up in her Destiny.
This is a resurrected plot idea from...like...2010 It's a C.J. Cherryh-esque sci-fi story.
A group of humans was abandoned on a planet for reasons of...IDK, war or something. There is some sort of...long-lived sentience there, but they don't interact with it much--or, well, one of the two main cultural groups does, the other does not. Said sentient force shaped that particular cultural group. There is a very narrow band of habitable surface of the planet, the humans live there. Over time, they sort of coalesce into a couple of major nations/culture-bases, with several splinter groups off to the side. The population remains relatively small, due to ecological/geographical constraints.
Several thousand years later (i'm thinking like 40-50k, because I sort of want them to be a recognizably distinct subspecies), they reconnect with regular humans. And then...shenanigans, IDK.
This is a relatively new idea, I came up with it just this past summer. It takes place on a made-up map, because there are no real-world countries that did what I want, and I want the freedom to develop my own figures/political mores/cultural whatever. However, this would be realistic? So, like, no magic or anything. For the purposes of explanation, I'll use European cultures/institutions as references.
Okay. so. previous generation setup: there was a war between Not!France and Not!Spain. The Not!Pope at the time negotiated peace between them, which involved king of Not!France marrying king of Not!Spain's sister and vice-versa. Each of those kings then has two sons.
Fast forward to current day, the two kingdoms are starting to gear up for war again. The new Not!Pope sends his sons (or possibly nephews) to the kingdoms as envoys to try and keep that from happening because we don't want that shit in our Not!Europe, yo. New king of Not!France has two daughters and a bastard son. One of his daughters dies and then, after the king dies, his surviving daughter and bastard son fight over the crown. He also has a younger brother who was fostered with his cousins for a while, and has wandered off and is refusing to play politics anymore. This is important
The king of Not!Spain later dies, around the same time as his Not!French counterpart does, leaving no children. His younger brother takes over for a while but is later killed in an uprising.
The story would mostly follow the political machinations/backstabbing of the three courts--Not!France, Not!Spain, and Not!Vatican--and it somehow ends with the king of Not!Spain's younger brother being the legal heir to both kingdoms. He isn't particularly happy about this.
And that's about what i have.
...sooooo, thoughts? help me choooooose
