avatar newthing and request for input!
soooo while i was bored stuffing envelopes this afternoon, i had some thoughts:
a) avatar's planet/world seems to be a globe--curved horizons and what-not.
b) the firenation doesn't attack the earth kingdom from behind, as well.
therefore:
c) there's something in the way.
to start with, firebenders at the poles, waterbenders on the equator, earthbenders on the corners of the map, airbenders on a large continent in the center.
the avatar cycle also goes in backwards order. air, fire, earth, water.
then i started thinking about bending--is it the same, or is it, also, opposite? i decided it should be opposite.
firebenders: start with lightning/electricity/magnetism. only the most powerful and destructive stormbenders (what i'm tentatively calling them) can bend fire.
earthbenders: start with metalbending. only the most powerful can break it down to its component parts and bend rock/earth.
waterbenders: start with bloodbending. as a result of this, i've done a bit more work building on their society. since, um, everyone knowing combative bloodbending is scary as all fuck. so, each island (they live in an archipelago like the firenation) has one witch line. the witches are all female, and have a system of breeding where it's unclear who the father of the new daughter is--new daughter is conceived when the her grandmother dies or when her mother turns thirty-five, whichever comes first. male babies are all killed. these witches defend the nation, and they're the only ones allowed to practice combative bloodbending, all other benders are exclusively healers. the witches can, along with puppeteering, stop hearts and turn people/their organs inside out. scary, scary ladies. anyone who is not a witch who is caught practicing combative bending is killed. no matter what their reasoning behind it was.
and then we come to airbenders. this is where i'm stuck, since we don't have an Ultimate Airbending Technique i can expand on for the alternate societies.
any ideas?

Okay. so, i started thinking about what might be in the way. given the way the deities of the world work, i figured it was oppositeland!
