But, as a guy I'd have to say that whether she's pregnant or not shouldn't matter. If he wants to be faithful because he's in love with her, she could be horribly disfigured and he'd not care. (And, we won't even talk about pervy guys and pregnant wives.)
So, I think I'd start off with an outline of a story about how the surrogate worked to weave her way around and within his feelings of love. She is not trying to overcome them, but to strengthen them by creating a temporary place for herself, as would a nurse with the wounded, and by showing him how much his wife cares for him and loves him.
And, then I think I'd flesh out, as it were, the details of how she leads him through his difficult time.
I could probably come up with perhaps 5 steps that circumnavigate the gradual accomplishment of her goal.
