Year-end meme
Because everyone else is doing it, so why not?
1. What did you do in 2013 that you’d never done before?
Graduated college! Also got a grown-up apartment and grown-up job and basically successfully impersonated a grown-up.
2. Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
....I don't even remember what they were. Um. Possibly?
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My dad's brother has a baby now! As does my cousin A(Mom's brother's daughter). Neither of which I have met, since my dad's family is...mmm...non-communicative? Not for drama reasons, they're just quiet people. And cousin A lives in Tennessee.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
My childhood dog, Godiva :<
5. What countries did you visit?
Didn't travel this year, oh, well.
6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
A more interesting job. Actually feeling like a grown-up instead of pretending to be one :)
7. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
...um...I don't know? Probably May 17 'cause graduated or Sept 3 because Godiva or Dec 20 for reasons I'm not gonna go into here.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Graduated :D
9. What was your biggest failure?
...yeah, not getting into that here.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Word to the wise: don't taste-test caramel sauce while you're making it.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
...does signing a lease on my first grown-up apartment count?
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Most of my friends, I think. The College of Cardinals for electing Pope Awesome. And of course His Holiness himself.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
...that would take too long to list. But heading the list is probably Boehner.
14. Where did most of your money go?
...probably rent? Either that or food. If you're talking outlay-all-at-once for non-rent expenses, setting up the kitchen at the new place.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Grown-up living places :D
16. What song will always remind you of 2013?
....ffff, I don't know. I don't tend to associate songs with particular times in my life? Just fictional peoples' lives.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? ...I think about the same?
ii. thinner or fatter? Either the same or fatter
iii. richer or poorer? Richer.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Writing, travelling, music.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Procrastinating. Which is pretty much my always-answer here, heh.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Spent it with my parents and siblings. My brother's girlfriend came over for a while, too. Brother accidentally spilled roast beef blood/juice on her when he was clearing the table. That was memorable.
21. How will you be spending New Year’s?
Went to a party. Apparently I'm good at Taboo.
22. Did you fall in love in 2012?
Not with anyone specific.
23. How many one-night stands?
Zero.
24. What was were your favorite TV program(s)?
...ffff, I don't know. Um. In terms of shows that are running now, Grey's Anatomy and Supernatural remain semi-guilty pleasures, Person of Interest is (usually) thoroughly awesome, I'm watching Once Upon a Time with my mom...
I watched a lot of Say Yes to the Dress?
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
...I dislike/am annoyed with certain people more than last year?
26. What was the best book you read?
....ffff, I have to choose?
In terms of academic writing, I read a lot of John Douglas and a couple really interesting books on the history of the English language, plus some really cool biographies...also a lot of super-nostalgic kids books.
I didn't do as much new (or new-to-me) fiction reading this year? I liked A Memory of Light, partly for nostalgic reasons, partly because it was good. I read A Song of Ice and Fire and that pleased me. I read the entire Kushiel's Legacy series, of which I'd read the first six before, and those remain favorites.
So...yeah.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
...I'm not sure I discovered anything this year? Mostly I listened to stuff I already had/got new music from artists I know I like. Huh.
28. What did you want and get?
Books, my BA, some successful steps out into the Adult World...
29. What did you want and not get?
...prefer not to answer in a public forum. Heh.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
...that I actually saw? Probably Thor 2. That I have immense respect for but will never watch because genre? Pacific Rim.
31. What did you do on your birthday?
Nothing on the actual day, but I took my friends out to dinner two days before and had a nice dinner with my parents and sister the day before.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
...I don't think one individual thing would? There's a lot of little things that added up would, but.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
...I have a fashion concept?
34. What kept you sane?
Books. My friends. History. My computer. The people living in my head who I can put through hell for catharsis I mean what?
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
...Lucy Liu, maybe? I don't know, it was kind of a slow year for me in terms of celebrity crushes.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
...I don't think a single issue did, but the shutdown and the thinking behind it sort of exemplify the mindset that got to me.
37. Who did you miss?
My doggie :<. Random elementary-school friends that kept cropping up in conversation for some reason. Another friend who I went to camp with for a few summers. I found some letters from her from when we were like twelve and we haven't talked in a while--I'm pretty sure we're friends on LJ, so if you are and you read this, PM me or something to say hi.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
...man, I don't know. I didn't meet many people this year.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013:
Even if you don't feel like an adult, it is possible to successfully play on on TV.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
i don't wanna be a stranger
to those expecting me to top the sun
but i never felt much stranger...
where's the magic map to help me find my way?
save this comet drowning in the milky way.
though their atmosphere is nice, i just can't stay there.
god, it's nice up here. i could stay for ages
wrapped in your embrace.
let them lay their blame. i'll defend my case.
i simply found my way.
