How do you keep track of your TBR pile?

I'm gonna be sort of disappointing on this meme, because I really don't ^^;; I mean, I have a vague knowledge of 'oh, right, I want to read that someday,' and I recognize titles if I've been recommended them before but...yeah.

Is your TBR mostly print or e-book?

Print. I don't read a lot of e-books, other than a few public domain things.

A Book That’s Been On Your TBR List The Longest

...Probably Three Musketeers in the original French? At least that's the one I know for sure that's been there the longest. At least since late HS/early college. Does that count, if the English translation I have is one of my favorite rereads?

A Book You Recently Added To Your TBR

Blood & Beauty, a novel about the Borgias.

A Book In Your TBR Strictly Because of Its Beautiful Cover

I don't actually put books on the pile for covers? I'll pick them up as impulse-reads, but then I usually read them instead of putting them on the stack.

A Book On Your TBR That You Never Plan on Reading

...I'm sure I have some? But, again, I don't keep super-strict track of this stuff.

An Unpublished Book on Your TBR That You’re Excited For

Prince Lestat. ...shut up.

A Book On Your TBR That Basically Everyone’s Read But You

Um. Not sure? Again, I'd have to actually have a list somewhere to answer this.

A Book On Your TBR That Everyone Recommends To You

See above--I get things recommended to me, but if I don't write them down/seek them out right away, I forget until the next time they're recommended. So probably a lot.

A Book On Your TBR That You’re Dying To Read

This is why I'm bad at this meme because lack of physical list. I'll just say all of them.

How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?

...I don't think I have one?

Quick (not really) AMoL rant

I finished A Memory of Light and I have a full retrospective/reaction to the series coming, but my reactions to one particular character/arc were expansive/passionate enough to warrant their own post, so here we are.

Bear in mind that I've only read the last two books recently, lacking the time and patience for a full series reread, so some of this may be irrelevant based on earlier appearances/information.

I rant at length under here. )

So, I just watched a video review* of the heinous monstrosity (hah) that is the Queen of the Damned movie. Which, for the purposes of this commentary and this commentary only, I am going to acknowledge it exists. Beyond that, it doesn't.

Can anybody recommend some good books about criminal/serial killer profiling?

::tosses random question to the all-knowing Interwebs::

How do you define YA fantasy/sci-fi/horror/speculative fiction as opposed to adult f/s-f/h/sf? I'm pretty sure it's not about the issues tackled--look at The Hunger Games, or Harry Potter, or the Heralds of Valdemar books. All of those deal with some pretty complex, adult issues, and all are primarily (at least initially, I think) aimed at teen readers. And I'm not sure protagonist age is a good indicator, either. Not many adult f/s-f/h/sf protagonists are under eighteen, but some are around that age, and some YA protagonists are older (see Dragonlance and some of the Heralds of Valdemar books). I know I can pick a passage from...say...Twilight and compare it to one from The Vampire Chronicles (trying to keep all other factors like genre, sub-genre, etc. the same) and know that Twilight is aimed at teens and The Vampire Chronicles at adults, but...I was just wondering if anyone knew exactly what goes into that?

/random question
/is possibly overly obsessed with analysis/genre categorization
/writing something that's supposed to be YA and unsure how to make sure it's differentiated from adult-aimed origfic written in the past

random blather comparing two works of feminist science fiction

Mostly posting this so I can hold on to the details of my Thinkythoughts. If you do read on, bear in mind that there are going to be spoilers for both novels (vague ones, but still).

so i'm gonna randomly talk about this book i read now

So, I just reread one of my favorite novels, 40,000 in Gehenna, written by C.J. Cherryh (the first one of hers I read, as a matter of fact). And...iono, random thoughts ensued. Mostly good ones, but, especially having read most of the Foreigner series (my favorite of Cherryh's novels/series), there were some things that stuck out at me in a less-good way.

summary and rambly commentary behind the cut )

Anyway, I really love this book--the last half of it, at least--and definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to read it.  And the rest of Cherryh's work, too.

Does anyone else remember...

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle? For some reason, I was thinking about those stories today...

so, i recently came across a seven-year-old rant...

This one, to be precise. And I have some...thoughts.

Many, MANY thoughts )

Okay. I feel better now. Hopefully that was relatively coherent, and to anyone who stuck with me through all that, thank you.

Meme, from bookblather!

Comment to this post, and I will list seven things I want you to talk about. They might make sense or they might be totally random. Then post that list, with your commentary, to your journal. Other people can get lists from you, and the meme merrily perpetuates itself.

My answers! )

omg he did his research!

...well, sort of.

anyway, i've been rereading 'the three musketeers', which is one of my favorite books. now, all the stuff about george villiers and anne of austria must be taken with a grain of salt, but this is a historical novel (dumas pere wrote in the 19th century) based on a historical novel (written in...1701, i think) based on the real-life 1620s adventures of a musketeer named d'artagnan.

cut for spoilers. )

i find that bizarrely awesome. congrats to dumas pere. :D

:(

so, i read a lot of high fantasy/science fiction epic-type stuff/etc. of my three primary fandoms at the moment, one of them has protagonists older than i am.

one of the books i'm reading now--towers of midnight, the latest wheel of time book--drives this kinda home. it's taken 13 books to travel two years (which is an issue with the series, but anyway) making the core group of protagonists between 18 and 20.

i am about to turn 22.

they are off conquering/saving/destorying (it's complicated, it makes sense in context) the world.

what the fuck am i doing with my life?
shadowsong26: (not so happy)
2011-09-04 09:32 pm

on robert jordan's wheel of time series and why i like it as much as i do.

i'm putting this up because i was talking about this series with some friends of mine, and they raised some very valid points that made me honestly wonder why i keep coming back when jordan repeats the same mistakes over and over again (sanderson has cleaned up some of them, but he is trying to keep the books in the same mold, so).
thinky thoughts, incredibly wordy and rambly )
also, i kind of get a kick out of chapter 1 of each book starting with the exact same paragraph with just the place where the wind originates changing. formulae like that are kind of cool ^_^

rambling

so, kind of pissed at a couple unrelated rl things, but i don't really want to talk about those, so i'm going to rant at/about the book i'm currently reading instead.

i'm bitchy and only semi-coherent. )

following puck's example!

because i fail at time management heh

Things I Must Do Today

1. Post a maximum of one more time with prompts for avatarbigbang (isn't it funny how 'stop' and 'post' have all the same letters? but seriously i've already posted twice today with a total of nine prompts. it's one pm. i have no life.)

2. Finish the annoying disjointed section of izumific woohoo!
3. Title izumific ....yeah i got nothing.
4. Sit down to start plotting out that earth's children/bsg crossover i've been promising to work on for ages. so, kat, for an amusing mental image...ayla has left the clan to find a mate of the others. adama is the first man of the others she sees. also, she's fourteen.
5. Reread buried child, see if it's worth resuming probably going to give up on this, unless anyone strongly objects. i no longer remember where it was going--and while i could pick it up and take it somewhere...i dunno. lee's initial setup still interests me, but i find it more interesting to speculate on other people he might run into aside from jet than actually work on the fic.
6. Start Wuthering Heights Read the first two chapters!
