Feb. 13th, 2010 01:01 pmThings I Must Do Today
1. Post a maximum of one more time with prompts for avatarbigbang (isn't it funny how 'stop' and 'post' have all the same letters? but seriously i've already posted twice today with a total of nine prompts. it's one pm. i have no life.)
3. Title izumific ....yeah i got nothing.
new project poll!
Feb. 4th, 2010 07:21 pmhistory and gothic lit!
Jan. 15th, 2010 01:50 pmhistory class...kinda sucks. the teacher is difficult to pay attention to and there's this really annoying guy who was sitting in the front row and thinks obsidian is only found in the americas. the material's going to be interesting, but the class itself...eh. ::sighs::
whee, new semester
Jan. 12th, 2010 04:53 pmMonday: Biology 102 lecture 1230-145 (bio is mostly ick, but i took 101 last semester so this was logical. it also took me for-freaking-ever to get into one that fit my other schedule that wasn't at 6:30am)
Japanese 101 730-950 suzuki-sensei is this awesome little old japanese lady who came here for grad school, got married, and settled in to teach. she even taught esl for a while, despite not being a native speaker. she said that was fun :) she's also insisting on teaching us hiragana in words, rather than as individual characters, which makes a lot of sense. 'course, we don't know what the words mean yet, but that will presumably come later. concerns about this class: my english handwriting is bad enough, i'm slightly scared about how legible my characters will be, especially ones like a and o which look pretty similar. also, she heartily disapproves of romanji, so i can't ever let her look at my notes. and she frowns on taking notes on paper in class, says we should be focusing on speaking and work on the writing homework for that. but she's awesome and the final project is a two-page paper about any aspect of japanese culture. i think i shall do onna/katsura mono (noh 'woman plays') because i remember liking those best when we covered noh in my theatre history class at wesleyan.
Tuesday: Chorus 1-215 we're doing a haydn mass for our first concert squee!
Psych 202 430-710 taking for largely the same reasons as bio 102, except this kind of actually interests me.
Wednesday: Bio 102 lecture 1230-145
Bio 102 lab 2-440. i get to redo the dissection lab i had to rush in high school due to orchestra trip. this'll be fuuuuuun~
Japanese 101 730-950
Thursday: Chorus 1-215
Gothic Literature 7-940 so i haven't actually had this class yet, but the reading list is Frankenstein, Dracula, Jeckyll and Hyde, Wuthering Heights, short fiction by King and Poe...basically a course in literary horror in english literature. would've preferred the science-fiction lit course, but this was an awesome second choice ^_^
Friday: History of Western Civilization 1 930-1220. this was actually my fourth-choice history course (the other three i wanted were sadly full when i finally gave in and registered after waiting for ages to hear from the four-year unis i was trying to transfer to). but i got cheated out of this in high school (tj is soooo sooper speshul that we get 'principles of engineering and technology' instead of history freshman year -_-;; ) so i am looking forward to it.
will post again on friday after taking history and lit.
this semester should be fun! if full ^^;;
woohoo! so, i had my second day of classes today, and i'm psyched ^^
monday/wednesday 11-1220: History of Theatre and Drama II. continuation of the course i took last semester, going from restroation to the present. i'm excited! except we're reading godot (haha, almost typed dodo) which i don't like. i think stoppard did it better when he immitated it in R&G. but oh well.
monday/wednesday 110-230: Greek Drama. squeeeeeeee! i've read/am familiar with half these plays already, from either high school or last semester's section on greek drama, so the reading isn't quite as daunting as it looks like on the surface. plus, the teacher's awesome.
tuesday/thursday 10-12: Acting 1. i love david jaffe. he's funny and has the most amazing voice. and our first homework assignment is to write a play and email it to him by noon saturday. and that's it. no other requirements. it doesn't even have to have characters. yay bizarre! although i started reading david mamet's book, and i want to beat him with the giant heavy hardback stanislavsky (sp?) book. not because i disagree with pretty much all he says (though i do), but because he's so. fucking. condescending about it. he does that whole 'oh, i don't mean to judge, but...' and then ARGH. but i'm excited about the class anyway :D
tuesday/thursday 110-230: International Politics. this class is gonna be so fascinating and fun. we start with the peloponesian war (then jump a millenium or two). plus, my teacher's hair begs to be petted. it's short and spikyish. and she's awesome for other reasons besides her hair, too.
new testament final

Sep. 4th, 2008 12:07 am
so, i had all four of my classes today (er, yesterday, it's after midnight now). and they're all awesome, so hopefully i'll be able to switch french sections and keep them all.
1. French 215. standard language course, but it looks like a fun one. last level of standard language course before all the lit courses, so i want to take it as soon as possible. which means i need to find a way to switch into the ten oclock section so it doesn't conflict with
2. History of Theatre and Drama 1. OH MY GOD. such love and win. i know half the people already from shows and BPT last year. and the professor? 'i'm ariel watson. you can call me ariel, or doctor watson--which is totally the only reason i got a doctorate--or doc watson or whatever you feel like.' plus, the course material is awesome and our final project is to design a production of a play from one of the playwrights/movements we look into, tying the historical context to modernity and fun stuff like that. i can't wait ^_^
3. Murder and Adultery: The French and Russian Novel. first, we read a bunch of stories. then we read two french and two russian novels (i forget the first, crime and punishment, madame bovary, and anna karenina) and talk about how the russian novels are basically taking the concepts of the french novels and going STFU YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG STUPID FRENCH PEOPLE. and i'm going to get a half-credit for doing a tutorial reading exerpts of the french novels in french and dicussing them wit the teacher. good times.4. Introduction to the New Testament. topic itself is fascinating enough. but the professor, in addition to being totally awesomely insane and prone to tangents on baseball and coffee, wrote one of the first books on the noncanonical gospels, and several on the gospel of thomas. SO.
i'm really looking forward to this semester :D
